Whistler Street Entertainment kicks off summer
Annual animation series extended for 2011
It’s become a staple of summer fun in Whistler, and if this weekend’s kickoff schedule for the Whistler Street Entertainment program is any indication, this year could be the annual event’s best year to date.
With a classic car show, Lego workshops, inflatable sculptures and live music performers all jammed into Whistler’s May long weekend, there will be no shortage of things to keep families entertained throughout — and it’s all thanks to the cooperation of various Whistler organizations.

Whistler Bike Park opening draws near
Extra snow a challenge to crew preparing for first day
The Whistler Mountain Bike Park crew has had a lot more snow to deal with than usual this spring, but park manager Brian Finestone said his team has been working hard to have trails ready for Friday’s (May 20) opening day.
“Preparations are going well, all things considered,” said Finestone. “There’s been a bit of an unprecedented snow pack below 1,000 metres this year with the good snowfall and cold winter we had, so we’ve had a bit of a challenge.”
Despite that struggle, a Tuesday (May 17) press release said eight of the park’s trails will be ready to ride on Friday — A-Line, Crank It Up, B-Line, Heart of Darkness, Ho Chi Min, Crack Addict, Devils Club and Hornet. The Joyride Jump Park and the Air Dome will also be opened on Friday.

Whistler Blackcomb has claimed the title of “Favorite Overall Resort” in OnTheSnow.com’s Visitors Choice Awards for the second year in a row. The Awards are an annual list of favorite resorts as ranked by user ratings from the site’s 3.4 million monthly unique visitors.
Whistler Blackcomb received high praise from OnTheSnow users. One voter stated: “I’ve skied Whistler in multiple visits, from deep winter to true spring conditions and have had a blast every moment,” while another wrote, “Major vertical, so much space, immaculate facilities, great staff. If you love the slopes, this place is a must.”
Users rated resorts across North America on a scale of one to five in five categories: overall experience, nightlife, family-friendliness, downhill terrain and terrain park. For the Visitors Choice Awards, the OnTheSnow.com team picked the resorts with a minimum number of reviews and the top average score in each category to receive honours. OnTheSnow.com honoured each of the winners on April 6 at the Mountain Travel Symposium in Beaver Creek, Colo. This is the second consecutive year Whistler Blackcomb has received this award.
“We are thrilled with this accolade,” says Stuart Rempel, Senior VP of Marketing and Sales for Whistler Blackcomb. “The reviews posted to Onthesnow.com really speak to the full mountain experience Whistler Blackcomb offers. This season has been incredible and we are well on our way to reaching our second snowiest season ever. With 1442cm of snowfall to date, and 45cm in the past week, the spring skiing conditions are excellent. There is still plenty of great skiing and riding to be had this season with Blackcomb Mountain open until May 23. Guests still have time experience this unbelievable place for themselves at great spring prices.”
OnTheSnow.com also named users’ top regional picks in the Far West, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Pacific Northwest and Rockies. Whistler Blackcomb ranked “Best Overall” from the Pacific Northwest region.
