Peak to Peak Gondola

On April 17, 2007 Whistler Blackcomb announced the construction of the Peak to Peak Gondola, for completion in December 2008.  Two Mountains - Whistler and Blackcomb will be united by a high-alpine gondola that will set world records for length and height while providing and unmatched experience for winter and summer guests.

  • The Peak to Peak Gondola will travel 4.4 kilometers in just 11 minutes, transporting guests from Whistler's Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain.
  • Construction commenced in May 2007 and the Peak to Peak Gondola will officially open on December 12, 2008
  • The gondola will be the world's largest unsupported (free) span of 3.024 kilometers (1.88 miles) between the two towers furthest apart.  The highest vertical point is over Fitzsimmons Creek at 415 meters (1,361 feet) - the world's greatest distance above a valley floor.

 

Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre

The Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Centre, owned and operated by the Squamish and Lil'Wat Nations, began construction in 2005.  The Centre, celebrating the two Nations working together in their overlapping territories, houses exhibition space, a 79-seat theatre, restaurant, cafe, eco-tourism desk, and gift shop.  Visitors to the centre will be educated about the two Nations with an interpretive walk through the forest and carving display, and ethnobotanical demonstration in gardens outside.  

 

2010 Olympics

To accommodate the alpine, nordic, and sliding events for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games venues have been constructed in Whistler.  The following facilities were completed in December 2007:

  • Whistler Olympic Park - host to biathlon, ski jumping, Nordic combined and cross-country skiing events.
  • Whistler Sliding Centre - host to bobseld, luge and skeleton events.

The Athlete Village and Althete Centre are currently under construction at the south-end of the Resort across the highway from Function Junction.  Post Games, the Athlete Village will become a residential neighbourhood as well as a training and resident facility for athletes.

A new Whistler Celebration Plaza in the heart of Whislter Village will be home to the nightly medals ceremonies, spectacular entertainment and the closing ceremony for the 2010 Paralympic Games. 

Whistler Public Library

The new Whistler Public Library opened on January 26, 2008.  The facility boasts a 14,500 square foot floor plan to house books, periodicals and audio/visual collections.  New additions include a business/computer center, children's programming room, quiet study areas, and a living-room style reading area.  The new facility is environmentally friendly, using low emitting and local materials to optimize energy performance, reduce water use, maximize use of natural light, and manage techniques for storm water, snow and construction waste.
